Water does not usually stay on top of a mountain, but flows along a valley.

물이란 본디 산 정상에 머물지 않고 계곡을 따라 흘러 가는 법이다.

Such true virtue does not dwell on those who are about to rise above others, but only on those who are about to be humble and low.

이처럼 진정한 미덕은 다른 사람보다 높아지려고 하는 사람에게는 머물지 않으며 겸손하고 낮아지려는 사람에게만 머무는 법이다.

 

It is the wiser man in the world who can learn something from anyone he meets.

만나는 모든 사람에게서 무엇인가를 배울 수 있는 사람이 이 세상에서 가장 현명하다.

 

When water is sprayed on the burning firewood, it becomes cold to the core, but even if you apologize to a man who is seriously angry, you cannot extinguish the fire in his heart.

불타고 있는 장작에 물을 뿌리면 안까지 차갑게 식지만, 심하게 분노하고 있는 사람의 마음속 불은 사죄해도 끌 수가 없다.

 

To know a person, look at his wallet, pleasure, and complaints.

사람을 알려면 그의 지갑, 쾌락, 그리고 불평을  보라.

 

Blame him once you've been fooled by your opponent. 

But if you've been fooled twice by that person, blame yourself.

상대에게 한 번 속았을 땐 그 사람을 탓하라.

그러나 두번 속았거든 자신을 탓하라.
